Do you think voter suppression and intimidation had anything to do with this in Texas? I don't live in your state and you are the master of what goes on there, I'm just an outsider that reads you- but I wonder if the tyrannical workings of Ken Paxton scared people.

Where does racism and misogyny fit in here- because I actually think those are the top two issues.

The most *consequential* election of our lifetime and Democrats stayed home just because they're upset that Harris floated too far to the middle. I'm struggling with that one. Nothing like cutting off your nose to spite your face. But then again I have seen a few comments from the far left who are super pissed at AOC for supporting Harris.

Perhaps I'm overly pragmatic, but step 1 is to save democracy, that means vote for Harris - Step 2 is to move the party from the middle to the left.

The Overton Window is completely fucked now, we will not get back to the middle in my lifetime, I'm 55.

I don't know when I'll get out of my grieving process, and right now I'm full of rage and hate for the Trump voters and the none voters. But they will find out soon enough what they bought..... because the Republican gestapo started taking their masks off already on Wednesday.

Suppression and intimidation did impact us, but not 7.9 million votes impacted. Too many people stayed home.

Paxton is as just as much a criminal as Trump. Expect the worst.

Yes, I do think racism and misogyny were a factor, but I just don’t know how much. How do we measure that?

I like your steps

And how do we explain that North Carolina selected a Democrat for a governor, Democrat for lieutenant governor, democrat for Secretary of State and Democrat for attorney General........ but then they turned around and voted for Trump because he won North Carolina supposedly? It defies logic.

There's only two possibilities:

1. Sexism and racism, and you almost have to exclude racism cuz they previously voted in black mark Robinson - which means sexism is the issue.

OR

2. Rigged

Or they didn't vote. Also, many won't consciously admit -- even to themselves -- their misogyny or racism. Personally, my sense is that, in addition to the major issue of inflation, too many couldn't imagine a woman leader of the free world. And even more powerful than that was the disinformation reaching people we didn't through channels we never touch.

This election was about rascim, misogyny, greed and the fact that 54% of Americans are functionally illiterate. This country is dumber than bag of doorknobs. Can't leave out the lazy apathetic ones. Then there's classic invincible ignorance fallacy. Defending one's position while refusing to consider immutable contradictory facts. Agent Orange was given the Hare Psychopathic Test by over 200 noted mental health professionals. The scale is 1-40. Most humans are about a 5. Death row inmates are about a 22. Fuckwad was a 37.

This country will protect white privilege and their wealth at all costs. Women and minorities are the collateral damage. Republicans and some dumb ass democrats don't give two fucks about this country.

And speaking of SCOTUS , why not associate Roberts with the Robber Barons' or even the Devil. His court is tuning us into an oligarchy. That;s never good for the guys that cash their payroll check at the min-mart.

But really , how bout a commerical like this........Dark ominous music in the background...then the Voice.........'Trump dies himself orange, Vance wears eyeliner........could anyone be more Trans?......save ur kids, vote D' ......ps: i thunk that up in 2 minutes so imaging if I had $2B

Labor?.........cause Kamala's a girl and a black one to boot you are gonna vote for the oligarch loving , labor gains roll backing, wife beater......hell he's not even white himself, he's orange. Could be his shit-hole genes expressing themselves.

But really, ladies....WTF...voting for the Rapist. That will take a team of social scientists at an Ivy League school with much govt. funding a decade or more to comprehend. They should be forced to wear the Scarlet T.They should be shunned.

There will be a movie: "50 Shades of America'

But we won't , we will try to moderate our message....Am i right?

I bet we can moderate our messages such that we end up not protecting the rights of anyone.

Democrats are too nice, they keep playing the game as originally designed, but that game changed 50 years ago by the republicans, specifically Reagan - the Democrats have been 50 years too slow to respond. They take the high road thinking that's going to pay off - Republicans take the low road, lie cheat corrupt, steal.

Plenty of people have been raising the alarms over the years, but they were told they were overreacting and being paranoid.

Project 2025 started in 1980 with Reagan, he's the one that put us down this path.

I believe ignorance, disinformation and the desire for “2020 revenge” fueled a lot of the MAGA voters as well as many who were on the fence.

To those who sat on their butts and stayed home because they figured Trump couldn’t win so their vote was not needed: your apathy just put a convicted criminal in the White House again. And he won’t be happy just pardoning himself to stay out of jail. He’ll delight in the only thing he has ever loved besides himself: getting revenge on his enemies.

To all the misogynists, I have to say: it’s the 21st century! Countries all over the world have already elected women to lead their governments in recent decades. WTF?!! Even Mexico got enough men to elect their first woman president this year.

So, yeah: we need to work on the misogyny issue, voter apathy, and getting folks to turn out at the grass roots level for LOCAL and STATE elections. It starts from the ground up. The disinformation issue will be harder to overcome and is probably our worst enemy. Magas and non-voters will soon be having buyer’s remorse. Unfortunately, the rest of us also have to pay the price.

Michelle, thx for this. I agree with your path forward with some edits.

We need to:

- invest in grassroots infrastructure

- trumpet our Democratic values

- build & strengthen our own media network to inform, engage, and inspire Texas voters

As a Precinct Chair who blockwalked, mailed, and phone banked my far-south Travis County, my experience yielded this anecdotal data, specific to my precinct:

1. Nobody voted for me to be Precinct Chair. I volunteered bc no one else did. Guess I won in a landslide! :)

2. There were just 3 contested races for Precinct Chair out of the 450+ precincts in deep-blue Travis County last March. There were 4 on the R ballot, 14 in deeper red Williamson County.

3. Half the voters I spoke with expressed fears of violence or vandalism about putting up a yard sign. Again this is in deep blue Travis county, my precinct votes 70% Dem. I can’t imagine how bad it was outside Travis County.

4. Out of the 100+ people I spoke with, only one said they were more progressive than the TX Dems / Dems nationally.

From my point of view, Democrats in TX would do well to learn from Ben Wikler in WI.

Some key points from his recent Thread:

- Nationwide shift toward Trump of 6%, as every wealthy-country ruling party lost ground, regardless of whether it was L or R of center. Across Belgium, France, Japan, Austria, Portugal, the US, and the UK, the average swing was 20 pts. True for the first time in 120 years.

- Post-COVID inflation era marked a global wave against incumbent parties. In 2024, for the 1st year on record (w/120 yrs of data), every wealthy-country ruling party has lost ground, regardless of whether it was L or R of center. Across Belgium, France, Japan, Austria, Portugal, the US, and the UK, the average swing was 20 pts.

- In WI, the shift was just 1.5%. Not because Trump was weaker there, but because they were stronger. WI Dem persuaded & turned out even more voters for Harris than they did for Biden in 2020. They lost WI by just 0.9%— smallest margin of any state.

I don't know their entire operation. I do know that WI has year-round organizing and monthly donations that allow them to hire organizers year-round.

Thank you Michelle this is the best analysis I’ve read. Helps me see a way forward. Now writers and thinkers can cogitate on your words and take heart

Thanks for an informative analysis for Democrats losing in Texas and some other states, Michelle. Here's my analysis, which is a little different, and I'd like to get your feedback.

The article below explains the reasons for Democrats losing in this election in southern Texas. It states, “He shared a video from one of his gatherings in which a woman complained that her husband, a Latino immigrant who had recently become a citizen, could no longer get a construction job because local contractors were hiring only unauthorized migrants, who generally worked at lower wages.”

Per Bernie Sanders, sixty percent of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and don’t have more than $400 in their bank accounts for an emergency. Those in this group didn’t benefit from the economy and stock market doing well in the last two years. They suffered when cost of food, energy, gas and rent increased by twenty percent in four years but their inflation adjusted income did not increase. It didn't help that the Federal Reserve kept the interest rates high for too long when inflation was under 3% and that made mortgage rates go high and buying a home unaffordable for many.

A young white working-class guy who came to our house a few days ago to provide a service said that he voted for Trump as he was better off financially four years ago. He agreed with all my reasons why I voted for Democrats. But it was more important for him that he was not better off today than four years ago. Another Hispanic young working-class guy who came to our house to provide another service about a month ago was genuinely concerned about California offering zero percent loans for home ownership to undocumented immigrants while citizens like him struggle with high mortgage rates. It seems that the California legislature passed such a bill with some strings attached but Gov. Newsom vetoed it evoked a lot of criticism.

As Reagan famously asked in the presidential debate in 1980, "Are you better off today than four years ago?" The answer was no for most Americans as they were adversely affected by inflation during President Carter's term. Reagan won in a landslide.

The migrants coming in the last four years were adversely affecting the income of many in the working class or they felt that their income will be threatened. A lot of these migrants are carpenters or plumbers or electricians and so on. So inflation and illegal immigration were the dominant issues in this election and both had an adverse impact on the working class. This is why President Biden's favorability rating tanked. As VP, Kamala was associated with the failure of the Biden administration to curb illegal administration and the aggregate price rise during the last 4 years by a lot of voters in the working class. They just ignored the many significant accomplishments of this administration.

As Carville famously said in 1992, “It is the economy, stupid.” Thoughts?

Expand full comment

Thank you for your thoughts. I agree with much of what you’re saying—financial strain is hitting working-class Americans especially hard, and economic insecurity is a powerful motivator at the ballot box. As you noted, people remember who they were better off under and often look to past leaders who seemed to offer economic stability.

But I believe we need to look beyond inflation and immigration to a deeper, more systemic problem—corporate influence. Large corporations have been consolidating power and profit at the expense of workers for decades. While many Americans see the effects of inflation and feel abandoned by the political class, they’re often unaware that corporate profits have soared in these same industries, from food to energy. Wealth is increasingly funneled into the hands of a few, while regular Americans are left struggling with rising costs.

This corporate stranglehold on our country is a big reason I’m skeptical we’ll see improvements in the economy in the next four years, regardless of who holds office. Corporations have a stronghold on lobbying, policy, and even regulatory bodies like the Federal Reserve, which impacts interest rates and housing. Until we address corporate greed and its impact on the economy, I worry we’ll continue to see this cycle of economic hardship and division.
