Early voting starts in 15 days, and election day is in 30 days. It’s crunch time for candidates up and down the ballot, including this Tarrant County candidate, Scott White. That’s why I was happy to see White this morning out blockwalking with an army behind him, trying to flip this seat.
Who is Scott White?
Scott White is a fifth-generation Texan who has seen the power of public education firsthand. Born and raised in Texas, White went from humble beginnings to building a successful career as a Managing IT Director at Accenture. After 32 years, he retired in 2022, but it was far from a quiet retirement. Instead of stepping back, White stepped up, inspired by the radical changes happening in Texas, particularly around public schools.
Public education isn’t just a policy point for White—it’s a core value. It’s the foundation that allowed him to thrive, and now, he’s determined to protect it from a political system increasingly controlled by billionaire donors and special interests. His mission? To stand against school vouchers and fight for fully funded public schools.
White’s strength lies in his extensive experience handling complex projects and business operations—skills he intends to bring into public office. He’s not afraid to take on powerful incumbents or entrenched systems, particularly the Texas GOP, which he believes has lost its way, prioritizing a wealthy few’s interests over everyday Texans’ needs.
As a father of three daughters, White’s commitment to protecting women’s rights is another driving force behind his candidacy. White is the kind of leader who listens, understands the importance of community, and believes in common-sense solutions. His dedication to education, economic growth, and individual rights makes him a formidable candidate, ready to challenge the status quo in Texas politics.
Who is Giovanni Capriglione?
Giovanni Capriglione moved to Texas in the early 2000s. Before that, he lived in California and Massachusetts. However, he currently calls a million-dollar property in Southlake home. If you aren’t familiar with the area, Southlake is the wealthiest city in Texas. Southlake is also home to countless A-list athletes and celebrities. Capriglione is a multi-millionaire and the owner and president of Texas Adventure Capital LLC, a venture capital and private equity firm based in DFW.
Like so many other millionaire Republicans in the Texas House, he uses his position to enrich himself and his buddies, often at the expense and on the backs of everyday Texans, and pass oppressive measures, stripping Texans away of their liberty.
Capriglione has been in office for over a decade, long enough to vote in favor of racially gerrymandering the state twice.
Capriglione co-sponsored the Open Carry bill in 2013.
He co-sponsored the bill to allow people to refuse marriage services to the LGBTQ community.
He voted in favor of ending Sanctuary Cities, which raised the crime rate across the state.
He co-sponsored the bill that allows firearms in school parking lots.
He voted in favor of the bill that prohibits the government from contracting with any company that boycotts Israel.
Capriglione voted against cannabis decriminalization.
He voted in favor of the bill that funds the fake pregnancy centers with taxpayer dollars.
He voted in favor of making it a felony to protest a pipeline.
He co-sponsored Republicans’ racist anti-CRT bill.
He voted to ban cities from prohibiting gas hookups on new construction.
As long as he’s been in office, he’s been pushing for the regulation of women’s bodies, like when he co-sponsored the bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks or when he co-sponsored the bill to stop minors from receiving abortion care without parental permission. Nearly every bill regulating women’s bodies over the last decade has Capriglione’s name.
He co-sponsored the bill to increase the costs of abortion care in 2017.
Capriglione co-sponsored a bill requiring doctors to report every time a minor received abortion care.
He co-sponsored the “Preborn Nondiscrimination Act,” which made it illegal to terminate a pregnancy if the fetus had a life-threatening disability.
He co-sponsored a bill forcing doctors to try to save the life of a non-viable fetus in some circumstances.
Capriglione was a sponsor of the “Trigger Bill,” which banned abortion care in Texas once the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
Those votes are just the tip of the iceberg, as Capriglione has served six terms in the Texas House. Has he ever done anything good for the people of Texas? Sadly, no.
What about this district?
Aside from Southlake, this district covers Colleyville, Westlake, Grapevine, Keller, and parts of Euless.
That’s in the Northeast corner of Tarrant County.
When Republicans redrew this district in 2021, they gave themselves a +22.6-point advantage.
While this race is undoubtedly an uphill battle, Capriglione has a lot of strikes against him. Scott White, a former Republican, will need crossover votes. With this 2024 election being as strange as it is, the never-Trumpers, who are more likely to be affluent, may cross the aisle for Kamala, Allred, and White in this district.
It’s too early to say, and no one can predict the future (sorry, Nostrodomous), but this election feels very different from those we’ve seen in previous years. If Republicans lose even 10% of their base in Texas because of the Trump factor, then Democrats will make massive sweeps across the state and very well could see HD98 flip.
To flip Texas House District 98, Scott White will need to focus on several key strategies that can bridge the wide partisan gap in this historically Republican stronghold, including:
Appealing to moderate Republicans and Independents.
Focusing on local issues (like public education).
Leveraging the “Trump Effect” or the GOP Civil War.
Boosting turnout with unlikely voters.
Expose Capriglione’s record.
If White can effectively execute this strategy, tap into cross-party voter sentiment, and maximize turnout, he could flip this seat in 2024.
Elections are more than dates on a calendar—they’re about shaping the future of our communities and our state.
Scott White is out there daily, knocking on doors and speaking directly to voters because he knows what’s at stake in this race. Now is the time for us to get involved. Every action counts, whether joining a campaign event, donating a few dollars, or ensuring your friends and family are registered.
Don’t wait for change—be the change. Get informed, get involved, and most importantly, get out and vote. The future of our state depends on it.
