What a year. Between Democrats’ nose dive in Texas and Trump’s re-election, 2024 is one political mess I’m glad that we’re leaving behind. With 14 days until the Texas Legislature begins and 20 days until America falls Trump is sworn in, the political climate isn’t likely to simmer down anytime soon.
I will do my best to tune the orange one out because there’s way too much going on here at home. The Republican Civil War (the Texas version) is still raging on. Representative Carl Tepper (R-HD84) said in an interview that the current Republican Party of Texas is irrelevant and doesn’t represent Texas Republicans. He responded to Abraham George’s primary threat by saying, “Bring it on.”
Meanwhile, today, Ken Paxton announced his Revenge Tour 2.0, where he’ll be holding events in the districts of House members who still have yet to bend their knee to David Cook (R-HD96).
It’s hilarious. This is one trend you should expect to see continue in the New Year. The Republican Party is the Republican Party’s worst enemy, and in 2025, the Republican Party vows to destroy the Republican Party. 🤪
Although the 89th Legislative Session will open on January 14, do not expect the Spearker’s race drama to be resolved by then. In fact, I expect it to get really ugly, and I can’t wait until they have the cameras on them.
What can you expect from Lone Star Left regarding the Legislative Session?
If you haven’t followed in previous legislative sessions, I’ll be watching all of the important committee hearings and when the House and Senate meet in the Chambers. I screen-record all of it and upload the best clips throughout the day.
In the last session, I posted lege clips mainly to Twitter and TikTok, but with Twitter now being Nazi-central and TikTok possibly going away, I will switch things up. I’ll have the best and most informative clips on the Lone Star Left YouTube channel, so follow me there.
Throughout the session, I’ll email you daily updates on what’s happening with bills and essential legislation. I’ll try to keep the list of important upcoming committee hearings updated at the bottom of each article for those who plan on testifying on various issues.
Even though the Republicans are in complete disarray, half of the Republican freshmen barely have two brain cells, and the GOP is focused on ridiculous things like imaginary UN takeovers and dildos in pharmacies, we still need to be prepared for the worst.
Further restrictions on voting rights, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and increased segregation in universities and government agencies should all be expected from the upcoming legislative sessions. Vouchers may also pass.
And the climate? We’re mostly too late on that, anyway, but we should expect to see Republicans ask, “How quickly can we push humanity toward extinction?” After all, this is Texas, and the GOP made it a felony punishable by ten years in prison if you use your First Amendment right to protest an oil pipeline.
The Left in Texas podcast is coming back.
We launch on January 10. It’ll be uploaded to Lone Star Left so you won’t miss a thing. Our first guest next week will be newly elected House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu. He’ll let us know what we should expect in the upcoming session. More details soon.
With so much at stake, staying engaged and informed is more critical than ever. I’ll be breaking it down for you, not just with clips and updates, but with deep dives into how these laws will affect your daily life and what you can do about them. Whether it’s testifying at hearings, organizing locally, or simply staying informed, we’ve got to be ready to fight like hell. The Republican circus might be entertaining, but the consequences are deadly serious.
The Texas Democratic Party will have a new chair next year.
Of all the things I’m hopeful about in 2025, the direction of the Texas Democrats is one of them. We’ve been on a long losing streak, and I hope new leadership can finally whip our Party into shape.
The Texas Democratic Party has updated its website with election procedures, candidate qualifications, and the filing period. The filing deadline for an interim chair is January 27, 2025. Only four people have filed to run, although I’ve heard the names of as many as 20 being floated around.
Filed so far:
Rabbi Misha Ben-David (Travis County)
Kendall Scudder (Dallas County)
Darceal Tobey (Travis County)
Rev. Steve Miller (Rusk County)
Our SDEC (State Democratic Executive Committee) members will vote on this new chair, serving as interim until the next chair election in 2026. I’m incredibly optimistic about their pick, considering that 80% of SDEC candidates endorsed by the Texas Progressive Caucus at the last convention won.
In addition to the Progressive Caucus Chair debate in late January, the Party has set up five Chair forums through March.
I’m saving my commentary about the Chair election until after the filing deadline, and we know who all the candidates will be.

u can absoluteey expect more miscarriage death, mom mortality and now this. Is anyone surprised?
From salon; "abortion bans don't just kill women. They kill babies. This is evident in the data, which shows a dramatic rise in the state's infant mortality after Texas banned abortions
'
As the Washington Post documented last week, it's also happening in a viscerally disturbing way, as the number of newborns found abandoned to die has spiked, as well. Babies, mostly dead, are being found in ditches and dumpsters throughout Texas, traumatizing the people who find them and the emergency workers who are called to help.
Let's hold and hands and shout all together; CREULTY IS THE POINT
"Republican leaders who control state government have long declined to fund an awareness campaign so that new mothers know where to turn should they decide that they cannot keep their baby."
