Justice for Uvalde: How People Can Help in 2024
Two Years After May 24: Simple Steps to Raise Awareness for Uvalde's 21 Victims
Like many other Texas parents, the end of the school year now brings a sense of unease. After the unthinkable thing that happened at Robb Elementary in Uvalde just two years ago, little has changed to assure us that something like this won’t happen again. Even worse, the families of the victims have been let down again and again as they search for justice for their loved ones.
In January of this year, the Justice Department released a scathing report detailing the leadership failures that day. Even with that information, no one in law enforcement has been held accountable for their failure to act on that deadly day.
We haven’t forgotten those families and want to raise awareness of the lack of accountability with a simple project you can do. Download and print one or more of these signs to display in your yard. You can enlarge it to make a yard sign or print it at home to string together for a banner. I laminated mine first, then punched holes so I could string and display my message.
Once you have people’s attention, now what? Here are some actions we can all take to help push for Justice for Uvalde:
1. Write your state senator to demand an investigation. State Sen. Roland Gutierrez, who represents Uvalde, is leading legislation to make it easier for families of the Robb Elementary School shooting victims to sue the state and police officers. Ask your state senator to support his efforts to assist Robb Elementary families.
2. Advocate for Gun Control Contact your elected officials to express your support for gun control measures such as universal background checks and raising the age for buying certain types of semi-automatic rifles from 18 to 21. You can also donate to organizations advocating for gun control, such as Change the Ref.
3. Support Mental Health Services. You can support mental health services by donating to organizations that provide counseling and other mental health services. Some organizations that offer services in Uvalde are The Hogg Foundation for Mental Health and Survivors Empowered.
Whatever you opt to do, don’t choose silence. The Uvalde families need us to raise our voices together.
