People have to remember that the Repugs are SCARED...of losing power, of ceding social and political dominance, and of not having economic control. That's why they're willing to become fascists.

The other thing to keep in mind that those who fought during the Civil Rights movement had to face far worse than we do today. If they had the courage to fight, what's our current excuse to feel scared or hopeless? We need to follow their example, focus on registering people to vote (despite the Texas Democrats' ineptitude), and drive GOTV efforts as much as possible over every election like our lives depend on it.

Absolutely, they're scared. Just watch Abbott's behavior every time there's an election. He acts scared.

It was much worse in the 50s and 60s, I think people now don't even realize how bad it was. I read a lot of old newspapers and the Tuskegee Institute used to publish each year, how many lynchings, bombings, and other types of hate crimes happened the year before. (It was a lot) But, yeah that's my point, they had the courage and made it through, we can too.

GOTV is the key, as always.

Thank you for this article. I hope you are right that things will turn around. I've devoted so much effort this legislative session only to end up feeling like democracy isn't working. I'm a member of multiple different social media groups that a large number of members called about gun control, vouchers, anti-DEI, anti-trans legislation. They literally ignored us. They don't have to listen because they aren't afraid of losing their elections. I don't think Texas will ever be a liberal state. That said, we need to find a way to let them know they SHOULD fear not getting re-elected. The majority of Texans wanted to raise the age to buy an assault rifle from 18 to 21, and they didn't even listen to the majority.

We'll take the state back one day, I'm sure of it. And I believe it will happen before 2030, by sheer demographics alone. When our government is being ran by white supremacists, it's going to be hard to continue to ignore that white people are now a minority in this state.

It's going to take a lot of work, but I believe we can do it.

The question is: how bad is it going to get before demographics win over? If Republicans are now able to control what large counties like Harris County can and can't do, what else are they going to take control over before the next election?

Bad. Worse, even. Although, I'm sure the Justice Department will sue regarding the bill to takeover the Harris County elections, but who knows how long that lawsuit will take.
