Chuck Crews is one of the hardest-working activists in Harris County. He constantly registers new voters, does door-knocking for his campaign, and volunteers for community work. He’s facing an uphill battle and is running against one of the furthest-right Republicans in Texas, but his dedication and commitment are inspiring.
Who is Chuck Crews?
Chuck Crews isn't just another candidate running for office; he's a voice for the people of HD-128, whose current representation has long been neglected. Crews brings a unique combination of skills, experience, and passion to the table, making him the ideal candidate to challenge the status quo and fight for the interests of his constituents.
Crews focuses on issues affecting all Texans—education and healthcare. He is a staunch opponent of the school voucher scheme. On healthcare, Crews has been clear: abortion is healthcare, and reproductive rights are human rights.
His outreach efforts, including door-knocking and community engagement, aim to re-engage disillusioned voters who have given up on participating in elections. Crews believes that by cutting through the noise and speaking directly to the concerns of HD128, he can make a real difference in a district that has long been considered unwinnable for Democrats.
Chuck Crews is the right choice for those looking for real representation in the Texas House.
Who is he running against?
Most of Texas is familiar with Representative Briscoe Cain. If you’re not, he’s “Mr. Purity at the Ballot Box.”
That was in 2021, when Cain was behind most of the voter suppression bills that passed through the House. He was chairman of the election committee that year, and pulled some extremely outlandish stunts, like not letting his Black peers who were not on that committee ask participate in the hearings, even though many of the voter suppression bills were targeted at Black voters.
During that that legislative session, many people accused Briscoe Cain of being racist, myself included. For that, I was targeted by his supporter, who called me “ableist” arguing that Cain’s racism was because he was Autistic.
Obviously, that’s total horseshit. Racism is not a symptom of Autism, but it’s how the Briscoe Cain supporters handled that incident.
Cain also has a thing about scorecards. He votes against every single bill in the Texas House, except the culture warfare ones, in order to consistently rank highest on the Conservative Scorecards. Most Conservative. Most Fiscally Responsible.
Of course, we all know that voting against government initiatives that have long-term economic and social benefits isn't really the fiscally responsible thing to do. It’s a shortsighted approach designed to score political points rather than to build a sustainable future for Texans. Cain's obsession with maintaining his conservative credentials through these scorecards overlooks the real needs of his constituents—better schools, improved healthcare, and a robust economy.
Chuck Crews, on the other hand, is ready to do the hard work of addressing these issues head-on, ensuring that HD-128 gets the representation it deserves, with policies that will actually benefit the community in the long run.
What about this district?
This particular seat is a long shot. Not only do Republicans have a 30+ point advantage, Cain has taken in a lot of money from PACs and corporate donors, outraising Crews. But here is why I have a lot of faith in Crews:
This race is a rematch. Crews took on Cain also back in 2022 and he worked hard in that election, but turnout was low that year. I spoke with Crews early in 2023 about his intent to run again. What will be different this time?
Crews said he knew the deficiencies in that election, and has since been working hard to fix it. He became a VDR (voter deputy registrar), he’s been helping to recruit Democratic precinct chairs in that district, and he hasn’t stopped working. Almost every day (maybe every day) for the last few years he’s been registering voters, door knocking, shaking hands, and kissing babies.
There are a lot of Democrats working hard in Texas this year to flip their seats. Even though Chuck Crews have more of an uphill battle than many of them. He’s busting his hump as if this seat could flip this year.
Here he is at a campaign event with the National Party Chairman Jamie Harrison, just last week in Houston:
In a district like HD-128, where the odds are stacked against any Democrat, Chuck Crews’ campaign stands out not because of his resources, but because of his grit and determination.
He understands that change doesn’t happen overnight, and that flipping a seat like this requires more than just winning votes—it requires building relationships, re-engaging the electorate, and fighting for every inch of progress.
Crews embodies the spirit of grassroots activism, tirelessly working for the future of his district. While the race may be a long shot, Crews is showing that, with enough elbow grease and community support, even the toughest battles can be fought with integrity and hope. HD-128 deserves a representative who won’t just show up for a scorecard, but for the people. And Chuck Crews is that representative.
