An Honorable Duel: Rep. Glenn Rogers (R) vs. Ag Commissioner Sid Miller (R)
It's Republican Primary season, folks. That means we all get a front seat to the biggest clown show on Earth.
Few will disagree; Sid Miller is one of the most ridiculous politicians Texas has ever seen. When Sid Miller isn’t spreading racism and conspiracy theories on social media, he’s out there threatening his rivals with Wild West showdowns.
Greg Abbott fantasizes about shooting asylum seekers at the border, and Sid Miller fantasizes about shooting people he disagrees with ideologically. Surely, Miller meant it more in a tongue-in-cheek way, but implied violence should never be a part of any political campaign.
But you can’t get more pro-life than shooting those who disagree with you.
As we’ve seen in Texas and across the country, violent rhetoric has been on the rise since the Age of Trump. It’s undemocratic and harms the political process.
The far-far-right in Texas has labeled moderate Republicans or GOP members willing to work with Democrats in a bipartisan way as “RINOs,’ Republicans In Name Only.
Earlier this month, Miller endorsed Rogers’ opponent.
Mike Olcott (R) is running a primary race against Glenn Rogers in Texas House District 60. This is one of the few races Democrats don’t have a candidate in, which is fine because HD60 is a +64 Trump district, so it's like a Republican Thunderdome over there.
Just a side note: Olcott has been active with many local political clubs, and his hands are far from clean. If he wins, I’ll spill all the tea. 😀
Here is Sid Miller’s endorsement:
Miller called Glenn Rogers a “RINO” who betrayed Texas.
Yesterday, Representative Rogers posted a video on his Twitter page about how he voted against vouchers but not teacher pay raises.
Teacher pay raises were written into the voucher bill last session because Greg Abbott said he would not sign pay raises if vouchers didn’t happen. They didn’t happen, so teachers didn’t get any raises.
Rogers’ video is a good indicator that one of the attacks being used against him is the teachers’ pay raises.
Sid Miller made Glenn Rogers’ text message public.
According to Sid Miller, Glenn Rogers sent him the following text over the weekend:
Catch your breath.
The most hilarious parts of the text message:
“You are a bought and paid for pathetic narcissist.”
“If you had any honor, you would challenge me or any of my Republican colleagues to a duel instead of strutting around posting pictures with a rifle, threatening to shoot RINOS.”
“A RINO is a conservative Republican not bought and paid for by Wilks and Dunn.”
Not only was it hilarious, but it was also true. It's like a Texas-sized roast session among senior citizens.
Both Sid Miller and Glenn Rogers are nearly 70-years-old.
Here’s how we should expect an actual fight between the two to look like:
But after all that talk about shooting and political showdowns, it looks like Sid Miller blinked first. His response?
“There’s no telling what he’ll do once I start campaigning against him?” Miller said.
Does Miller sound scared? There’s a saying we have here in Texas. You would think Sid Miller would have heard it. “Don’t pull a gun unless you intend to use it.”
In the Lone Star State, where gun culture is as prevalent as BBQ, this saying is the gospel of responsible gun ownership.
Miller accepts the challenge and chooses a weapon.
First of all, Rogers said, “If you had any honor, you’d challenge me to a duel.” He was calling Miller dishonorable for not challenging him to a duel, but he wasn’t challenging Miller to a duel.
Secondly, after all of his “RINO hunting” talk, Miller says his chosen weapon is “words.”
Yes, you heard that right. Sid Miller is choosing words as his weapon. Y'all ever heard him speak?
I’ll save you the cringe. He’s about as good-ol-boy Texan as good-ol-boy Texans get. A debate between the two would undoubtedly be entertaining. But when it comes to wits, Miller is on the losing end.
A duel is perfectly legal in Texas.
Texas allows mutual combat, which is essentially dueling if both parties consent. Mutual combat is legal in Texas under Penal Code 22.06, which states that two people can agree to fight through verbal, signed, or implied communication. The fight must be between fists only.
It sounds like Glen Rogers knows the law, and Sid Miller seems to know how to talk the talk.
No matter what happens between these two Republicans, the rest of us are indeed in for heaps of entertainment. Stay tuned.
